Poetry – Alive and Kicking

Take a whole new look at (and listen to) poetry, when the Willy Lit Fest brings you three of Melbourne’s most dynamic and inspiring young women performance poets. Experience three vivid and distinctive performances, followed by an opportunity to discuss the writers’ art and inspirations.

Amy Bodossian is a critically-acclaimed Cabaret/spoken word artist. Soreti Kadir is a performance port, writer and musician. Emilie Zoey Baker is an award-winning poet and spoken-word performer. Hosted by Chris Ringrose.

Amy Bodossian is a critically-acclaimed Cabaret/spoken word artist — an unforgettable performer who has appeared on ABC’s Spicks and Specks and Please Like Me, performed at major festivals across Australia and headlined most of Melbourne’s top poetry events. Her first published collection, Wide Open, was recently published by Outside The Box Press. Amy has been nominated for a Green Room Award and won the Convenor’s Choice Award in the 2017 Melbourne Spoken Word Prize.

Alongside Amy we have Soreti Kadir, an Oromo, multidisciplinary artist whose work speaks eloquently to the silences in our collective conversations on freedom, equity, womanhood, injustice and progress. Soreti is passionate about her people, and about the global indigenous experience. Her debut book of poetry, Siyaannee, came out in 2015, and at the end of 2017 she released Prides Claw, a compilation of musical spoken word poetry. Prides Paw will be released in 2018.

Our third performer is the phenomenal, award-winning poet and spoken-word artist Emilie Zoey Baker, who has toured internationally, including Ubud Writers Festival, The Milosz Festival in Poland and the Sydney, Melbourne, Ottawa, Vancouver, Brisbane and Byron writer’s festivals. She was the winner of the 2010 Berlin International Literature Festival’s poetry slam and was a 2014 Fellow at the State Library of Victoria, poet-in-residence for Museums Victoria and coordinator for the National Australian Poetry Slam. She teaches poetry to both kids and adults and in 2014 was core faculty for the spoken word program at Canada’s Banff Centre. Emilie Zoey is creative director of OutLoud, the first Victorian teen-team slam, as part of The Melbourne Writers Festival.
