What Came Before – Anna George at Willy Lit Fest 2015
John Webb OAM, one of our fabulous Committee Members has written two reviews of books that feature at our crime panel – Fatal Attraction: Why We Love Crime
What Came Before by Anna George
This crime novel has a curious but effective structure, starting with a confession, to his Dictaphone, by solicitor David Forrester that he has killed his wife Elle, a former work colleague turned film producer. The novel builds its story through recollections by each of them into a powerful retelling of their relationship that ends so tragically. Hence the title ‘What Came Before’. As a psychologically based crime story, it makes for strong reading. Set in contemporary inner Western suburbs around Seddon, including Williamstown, it has a confident sense of place that adds significantly to the plausibility of the tale. The characters remain in my mind still.
